A little bit of history... 05/20/2011
My artistic career has developed on many levels. I worked as a graphic designer, theatre set and costume designer, and greeting card designer/illustrator. My love however has always been drawing and painting.I have studied art continuously, attending classes at the Chicago Art Institute, East Carolina University and Miami Dade College and have taken many private workshops, most recently studying with Master painters. I am an avid reader and experimenter, and a substantial portion of my painting and drawing abilities are self-acquired. I opened a studio/gallery in the Florida Keys in the early 1990’s, sold paintings, taught workshops and participated in art shows. Over several years there, I exhibited in numerous shows and galleries throughout Florida, winning many awards along the way. In 1999 I moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Vancouver, British Columbia, and continued to paint and exhibit, operating a studio/gallery where I painted and sold my work for the last four years, on Granville Island, in the heart of Vancouver.I am an active signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and have served on the FCA Board of Directors since 2007. I am a lifetime member of the Florida Watercolor Society, and have memberships in numerous art associations.I work in both classic and contemporary styles, and multiple mediums, combining creativity with solid technical skills. I believe strongly in every person’s creative ability and the powerful influence that accessing this creativity can provide the individual, our communities and the world. My art is very emotion based and I strive to capture a sense of place in our rapidly changing world.I recently left my gallery on Granville Island after four wonderful and successful years...and am free now to push my creativity in new directions. I am currently absorbed in watercolour paintings, using photorealism in the drawing phase and some abstraction in the painting phase with multiple transparent layers of colour to build depth and capture light...these paintings require many hours of work (the most recent was 65 hours over a period of two months). I’ll be focusing mainly on people and character studies. Add Comment Sandy Kay Interview 03/01/2011

Quite a challenge for me, but I finally ended up with a painting I'm happy to show you. There's something that feels right about painting these in the fall! A Painter's Path 11/11/2010
Orange Trio #1 "Orange Trio" Original Oil - 6" x 8" $125 This is my first of hopefully many paintings using alla prima style and painted in a small scale. Its also one of my first oil paintings, so challenges abound! Two painters I studied with recently, Liz Wiltzen and Gaye Adams, shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for this new painting journey that many artists are joining. I hope you will join me and see what unfolds. |
