Sandy Kay's Bio

Picture
Sandy Kay’s artistic career has been developing on many levels for all of her adult life.  She has worked as a graphic designer, then as a theatre set and costume designer, before starting her own company, designing and manufacturing what would become the largest line of nautical-themed greeting cards in the U.S.

Sandy has studied extensively, attending classes at the Chicago Art Institute, East Carolina University and Florida Atlantic University, in addition to many private workshops with artists whose work she admired. She is also an avid reader and experimenter, and considers a substantial portion of her painting ability to have been self-acquired.

After 18 years of developing her publishing business she sold her design rights to a large international company and was free to pursue her dream of painting and drawing full-time. She opened a studio/gallery in the Florida Keys, sold paintings and taught workshops and participated in art shows.  Over the years, she exhibited in numerous shows throughout Florida, winning many awards and receiving recognition for her art.

In 1999 Sandy moved to Vancouver with her new husband and together they started their own business.  In 2006, she transitioned out of her job as President and CFO of the start-up warehousing company and back into full-time painting.  As one of two resident artists, she currently paints and exhibits at Studio 13 Fine Art Gallery on Granville Island, where she also teaches, and sells her work.

Her paintings are very emotion-based, combining classic and contemporary styles and often reflecting West Coast themes.  Sandy enjoys creating her work in the open studio environment sharing with others her purpose and thoughts throughout the creative process. Sandy believes strongly in every person’s creative ability, and the positive influence that accessing this creativity can have on that individual, our communities, and the world.

In addition to Studio 13 Fine Art, her work can be found in many private and corporate collections in the U.S. and internationally.

“I am excited and honoured to announce 5 pieces of my original artwork have been invited to hang in the Office of the Premier at the Vancouver World Trade Centre (located at Canada Place) during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympic games”.  SK
