                        Canvas Oil Paintings

                        Picture
Oil painting is done with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil. It is well known that in the early modern Europe painting era that linseed oil was used to create the paintings. Often oil such as linseed was boiled with a resin such as pine resin or even frankincense, commonly referred to as varnishes and were prized for their glossy finishes. Later, other oils for painting occasionally used included poppy seed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. These oils exhibit many different properties to the oil paint, such as less yellowing or different drying times. Certain differences are also visible in the sheen of the paints depending on the oil. Painters often use different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments, effects desired, and the talent of the artist. The paints themselves also develop a particular consistency depending on the canvas or medium used.

First used in western Afghanistan sometime in the seventh century, canvas oil painting did not gain popularity until the 15th century at which point canvas oil painting began its migration westward during the Middle Ages. Oil paint eventually became the principal medium used for creating artworks. For Canvas Oil Paintings, the great transition began with many master piece Canvas Oil Paintings out of northern Europe, and by the height of the Renaissance, Canvas Oil Paintings techniques and styles had almost replaced tempera paints in the all of Europe.

Canvas oil paintings have remained to today carrying forwards a more classic reference and feel to them. Some of the more famous oil paintings include the Arnolfini Portrait, Jan van Eyck, 1434, Self portrait, Titian, c. 1512, La donna velata, Raphael, 1516, The Raising of the Cross, Peter Paul Rubens, 1610-11, Milkmaid, Johannes Vermeer, 1658-60, The Toilet of Venus, François Boucher, 1751, Napoleon Crossing through the St. Bernard Pass, Jacques-Louis David, 1801, The Third of May 1808: The Execution of the Defenders of Madrid, Oil painting of Francisco Goya, 1814, Le Moulin de la Galette, Pierre-Auguste Renoir 1876, Carnation Lily Lily Rose, John Singer Sargent, 1885-1886, Water Lilies, Claude Monet, 1916, and the oil painting Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue, Piet Mondriaan, 1937-1942.
